Margoon, a nature lovers’ inn

Margoon village, the popular tourist spot, is situated on the slopes of Zagros Mountain Range elevated 2000 meters above sea level. Located in Fars Province, it enjoys a mild and moderate weather in spring and summer but cold in the other two seasons. Based on local descriptions, the landscape used to host regional nomads in the olden times.
However, this summer resort has been evolved into a permanent residential area named Margoon. Thanks to its unique natural sceneries, the village is considered as one of the most interesting recreational sites in Iran, especially Fars Province.
The important highlights are Margoon waterfall; mountain peaks of Barm-e Firooz and Ranj; Gambil recreational site, and a ski resort.
Margoon waterfall is one of the most splendid Iranian waterfalls flowing through the rocks from an altitude of 70 meters spans an area of 100-meter width.
Items like wild trees grown on the steep slopes and mossy rocks multiply the beauty and magnificence of the area surrounded the waterfall.
Similar to many other Iranian villages, the dwellers work mostly in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry, and gardening; while some of them also make handicrafts. The residents are Shiite Muslims and speak in Lori dialect.
Women of the village, not only cooperate in farming activities, but also are active in the field of handicrafts; for instance they weave special carpets and rugs called kilim and jajim.
Wheat and barley are the two main agricultural products; fruits like apple and walnut are also planted in the gardens of Margoon. The flora of the village consists of juniper trees, Persian terebinth trees, and trees of wild pear and a species of wild plum.
The region is also home of various animal species such as partridge, hawk, wolf, fox, bear, and reynard.
Domestic architectural features represent a dense residential texture, for instance houses are built in a step-like fashion so that the roof of one house forms the yard for another.
Older dwellings are built of local materials like stone, wood, and thatch while in construction of the newer houses, iron, stone, brick, chalk and the like are used.
In general, natural attractions of Margoon village are not limited to what mentioned so far.
With the altitude of more than 3600 meters, Ranj mountain peak is the destination of many mountaineers and nature lovers. Situated in the southern parts of the village, it leans against the surrounding mountains like a huge erratic piece of rock.
During the wintertime, Shekarak ski resort hosts skiers and tourists who also climb the mountain peak of Barm-e Firooz. On the way to the peak, there are other sceneries including more than 260 small natural pools and water reservoirs.
Finally, visitors can be more familiar with the regional nomad cultures and buy walnut, honey, and gold fish from local villagers as souvenirs. (Photo: Afshin Azizi)
